Once upon a time there was a valley in the Andes that was cut off from the rest of the world by a powerful earthquake. At times his progress was like clambering along the face of a wall, and after a time the rising sun ceased to strike along the gorge, the voices of the singing birds died away, and the air grew cold and dark about him. He tried also to find food among the pine trees, to be comfortable under pine boughs while the frost fell at night, and — with less confidence — to catch a llama by artifice in order to try to kill it — perhaps by hammering it with a stone — and so finally, perhaps, to eat some of it.

Long years ago that valley lay so far open to the world that men might come at last through frightful gorges and over an icy pass into its equable meadows; and thither indeed men came, a family or so of Peruvian half-breeds fleeing from the lust and tyranny of an evil Spanish ruler. And blind philosophers came and talked to him of the wicked levity of his mind, and reproved him so impressively for his doubts about the lid of rock that covered their cosmic casserole that he almost doubted whether indeed he was not the victim of hallucination in not seeing it overhead. To look into each phenomenon he sees things from two points of view: one from the side of the blind, and the other from that of the sighted. The Country of the Blind is very good, it deals with intelectual diferences due to diferent habilities, in this case, using the sight as example. Un día Nuñez llega a la población conocida por leyendas urbanas como El País de los Ciegos. He watched her; he sought opportunities of doing her little services, and presently he found that she observed him. She used in the old days to sing hymn tunes, or the British national song for the time being, to these instruments, but latterly she has been silent and even careful over her work. الغريب في الأمر أنه كان يقول: أنا كفيف! It is one of Wells's best known short stories, and features prominently in literature dealing with blindness. One of their number falls thousands of feet down the side of the mountain and is presumed dead, but survives to find himself in a lost valley known as the Country of the Blind, or so the local legends have it though no one has any proof that this lost valley exists.
